  1. Close the water stopcock serving the machine straight away. The manufacturer gives this as an explicit warning for this fault because of the flooding risk.

    Expected result No further water can reach the appliance regardless of what its valves do next.

  2. Let the drain pump finish emptying, then switch the appliance off and unplug it.

    Expected result The pump falls silent and the machine is fully isolated.

  3. Look in the tub for foam. If it is full of suds, scoop them out, wipe round, and work out which product went in, because a foam overflow is a different problem from a burst hose.

    Expected result You know whether this was caused by detergent or by an actual leak. If it does not, go to step 4.

  4. Draw the appliance out and look underneath and behind it with a torch, without unscrewing any panel, to see where water is coming from.

    Expected result You can report whether it is coming from the inlet connection, the waste connection, or from somewhere inside the casing. If it does not, go to step 5.

  5. Run a finger round the door seal, clearing trapped debris and feeling for splits or a section lifted out of its groove.

    Expected result The seal is clean, supple and seated evenly the whole way round. If it does not, go to step 6.

  6. Book an appliance engineer and tell them the anti-flood device has tripped and what you found. Leave the stopcock shut and the plug out until they come.

    Expected result The engineer arrives prepared to drain the base tray and trace the leak rather than diagnosing from scratch.
